Sheep Dog Trials at Higland Games

The 12th Annual Open Sheep Dog trials kick off this year’s New Hampshire Highland Games, held Friday, September 22nd through Sunday, September 24th at the Loon Mountain Resort, Lincoln, NH.

On Friday morning, sheep and dogs start their traditional obstacle course, where the goal is for each dog to run four sheep through five obstacles on the course. Each sheep is worth 5 points and a perfect run earns 100 points. Following an elimination round, the top 10 qualifiers compete to establish the order of victory. The winner of the event receives the Campbell Cup, a silver perpetual trophy donated by the Clan Campbell Society.

The most common sheep dog is the Border Collie, bred for the job centuries ago by farmers living in the Scottish border hills. The dogs are known for their intelligence, physical strength, agility, and stamina. Historically, they have toiled tirelessly to gather large flocks spread over great distances and will go to any end to recover an animal lost from the flock. During World War I, British soldiers depended on the Border Collie to deliver medicine and supplies through trenches and across the battlefields.

“The Sheep Dog Trials are a great event for children and animal enthusiasts of all ages,” said Donald Munro, managing director of the New Hampshire Highland Games. “From sheep dogs to Scottish dance and from piping to pageantry, we offer fun for the whole family.”

Farewell.............

Irwin Honored at Crocoseum

By WENN| Wednesday, September 13, 2006

HOLLYWOOD - TV naturalist Steve Irwin's public memorial service will take place at his beloved 'Crocoseum' at Queensland's Australia Zoo, his widow reveals.
The announcement is the first public comment Terri has made since her husband was tragically killed by a stingray barb in the chest last Monday.

Much larger venues were initially suggested for the public send-off to accommodate the overwhelming outpouring of grief his death has prompted around the globe.

However, Terri insists the zoo Irwin's father set up is the most fitting venue for the reptile wrestler's memorial.

She said in a statement, "I cannot see how a memorial service would work in any other place other than the Crocoseum which he built here at the zoo and of which he was so proud.

"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen."

The public memorial will take place on Wednesday. Terri, Irwin's eight-year-old daughter Bindi, his father Bob and his friend and manager John Stainton will all speak.

The event will be broadcast live on television across Australia, the United States and Asia.

Australian country singer John Williamson, one of Irwin's favorite performers, will perform.

A private funeral took place at the zoo on Saturday after his family turned down Prime Minister John Howard's offer of a state funeral.
